Lighting Design Consultant from Concept to Construction
Thoughtful Lighting Starts with a Conversation
VOXO Design is a lighting design consultancy working with architects, engineers, developers, and design teams from concept through construction.
Lighting shapes how a space looks, feels, and functions. For this reason, it should be considered early and developed alongside the architecture.
At VOXO, lighting design begins with listening. We align lighting with project goals, technical needs, and user experience while preparing clear documentation that supports coordination and construction.
Our work reflects current building codes, energy standards, and IES lighting practices so teams can move confidently from design into engineering review.
VOXO Design was founded on the belief that lighting should be considered early, coordinated carefully, and designed with intention. As a lighting design consultant, VOXO works with architects, engineers, and design teams to integrate lighting seamlessly into the overall project vision.
Stephanie Butler is the Founder and Principal of VOXO Design. As an NCQLP-certified lighting professional with over two decades of experience, she brings a deep understanding of how light shapes the way we experience space. Her work balances technical knowledge with thoughtful design to create lighting that supports comfort, performance, and clarity.
Before founding VOXO, Stephanie worked across lighting distribution, energy efficiency programs, and engineering-led projects. This experience provided a broad understanding of how lighting impacts projects from concept through construction and how teams coordinate to deliver successful outcomes.
Today, she applies this knowledge through VOXO, helping design teams approach lighting with intention, confidence, and clarity.
How VOXO Approaches Lighting Design
Lighting design at VOXO begins with listening. Every project starts with understanding how a space will be used, who will experience it, and what the design team is working to achieve. From there, lighting becomes part of the conversation rather than an afterthought.
This approach helps teams make confident decisions early, coordinate clearly through documentation, and carry design intent smoothly into construction.

Thoughtful lighting starts with a conversation. VOXO follows a clear, collaborative lighting design process that supports project teams from early concept through construction.
Lighting is most effective when it is considered early, coordinated carefully, and documented clearly. This approach helps projects move smoothly from vision to reality.
1. Discovery & Conversation
Every project begins with understanding. We listen to how the space will be used, what the design team aims to achieve, and how lighting can support both function and experience. At this stage, lighting becomes part of the architectural conversation rather than an afterthought.
2. Project Alignment
Before design begins, we review available drawings, confirm project inputs, and align expectations with the design team. This step ensures lighting direction, documentation standards, and technical requirements are clearly understood before work proceeds.
3. Lighting Design Concept Development
Next, we translate project goals into lighting strategies. Fixture approaches, lighting layers, and control ideas take shape while remaining aligned with the design vision and technical requirements.
4. Design Documentation
Clear documentation allows lighting to integrate smoothly into architectural and engineering drawings. VOXO prepares coordinated lighting layouts, schedules, and narratives that support permit submission, engineering review, and contractor clarity.
5. Technical Coordination
Lighting must work within real building constraints. We coordinate with engineers, architects, and consultants to ensure lighting aligns with codes, energy standards, and performance expectations.
6. Construction Support
As projects move into construction, we remain available to answer questions, review submittals, and help maintain design intent through to completion if required.
Lighting design at VOXO reflects recognized practices from the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) and current building and energy standards used across Canada.
